Digital Onboarding in Private Banking Like an Olympic Opening Ceremony

Global private bank digital onboarding — wealth management UX

Digital onboarding for private banks was stuck in retail banking logic — long forms, clunky flows, experiences designed for volume rather than for people who have spent a lifetime building wealth. This global private bank challenged us to design something different: the first fully digital onboarding experience built specifically for high-net-worth prospects.

Our key insight came from the bank's own Relationship Managers — the people who knew clients and prospects best. Prospects at this level are typically doctors, lawyers, founders. They've sold a company or retired early. They have little to no financial experience, but enormous ambition. They don't want to know more about private banking — they want someone to understand them first.

We designed the onboarding experience as a journey broken into chapters — like an Olympic opening ceremony. Each stage had a clear purpose, a clear end, and a clear reason to keep going. We combined qualitative user research with quantitative market analysis, and validated the designs before launch with a group of board members who sent their own friends as test users.

The result set a new visual direction for the next generation of wealthy clients: clean, professional, and not scary — even for someone who says they don't understand finance. A wealth management UX that the bank described as the standard they now want to generate on mobile.
